HAL HARTLEY
THE NEW MATH(S) (2000)

Director: Hal Hartley
Year: 2000
Time: 15 mins
Music: Louis Andriessen & Michel Van der Aa
Eye of Sound: The choreographical action hardly disguises the film's bottom line. Maths are today aiming at concepts of eternity and recurrence, a brutal disruption of our poorly built conceptions of linear time. An apple and a clock seem to signal this circularity. A dance-theatre combat between two students and a teacher over the meaning of an equation triggers the action, in contrast with Andriessen and Aa's beautiful, contemplative vocal score - as if movement within the cycle is but an illusion in the eyes of recurrence.

ZBIGNIEW RYBCZYNSKI
KWADRAT (1972)

Director: Zbigniew Rybczynski
Year: 1972
Time: 4 mins
Music:
Kazimierz Serocki
Warsztat Muzyczny
Eye of Sound: Kwadrat ("Square") stands as a short but brilliant essay in shape management. Starting with pixel-like black and white silhouettes, the action gradually evolves to the depiction of a human being trapped inside a square-screen, and eventually returns to the original "kwadrat" form. The excellent angular music of Serocki, accompanied by the legendary Polish avantgarde ensemble Warsztat Muzyczny, renders Kwadrat all the more compelling and impressive.

SIDNEY PETERSON
THE PETRIFIED DOG (1949)

Director: Sidney Peterson
Year: 1949
Time: 18 mins
Music
Carl Austen
Leslie Turner
Hal Bronstein
Harry Reminick
Eye of Sound: An absolute classic of American avant-garde. Beautifully filmed, Petrified Dog is a surreal tale that transgresses the boundaries between day-to-day life and the realm of the absurd, merging them into a seamless whole. The brilliant concrète soundtrack walks side by side with the plotless picture, never joining hands with it. Tales of seduction, enmity and fear with a refined sense of humor and rhythm.

HENRY COW
LIVE IN VEVEY 1976

Year: 1976
Time: 75 mins
Music
Chris Cutler: drums
Dagmar Krause: vocals
Georgie Born: bass, cello
Tim Hodgkinson: organ, alto sax, clarinet
Lindsay Cooper: bassoon, oboe, recorder, piano, saxes
Fred Frith: guitar, tubular bells, piano, violin, xylophone
Eye of Sound: Recorded for a swiss TV show called Kaleidospop in August 1976, this is said to be Henry Cow's only video recording. Working on the still vacant outskirts of avant-garde, jazz, rock, chamber music and what-not, Henry Cow added to this uncanny condensation the haunting and idiosyncratic vocals of Krause and surrealist lyrics, creating an unique sound universe which was never to be repeated. Floating with rich and colorful textures, bright as early dawn, yet intricately complex and sombre, the Sound of Cow remains a mystery after all these years.

SUN RA
MAGIC SUN BONUS

Eye of Sound: To conclude our first solar expedition, Unknown Worlds' astronauts were kind enough to provide the Magic Sun bonus features. Photos of the Heliocentric Rex and his Court are shown over unpublished recordings of Ra's galactic poetry and music. An earthly salute to our Pathways comrades, and a million eye thanks.

SCOTT BARTLETT
OFFON (1968)

Director: Scott Bartlett
Year: 1968
Time:  9 mins
Music: Manny Meyer
Eye of Sound: It all starts with an Eye. Inside the Eye, cognition emits superimposed loops of visual distortion. With a blink of an eye, chromatic error confounds outside information, culminating in a Rorschach pool of shapes. Meyer's prophetic soundtrack breathes the same change of airs. It starts with a proto-techno industrial pulse, ordering perceived reality, and culminates in an explosion of electronic noise. A revolutionary films, in so many ways.

LILLIAN SCHWARTZ & KEN KNOWLTON
PIXILLATION (1970)

Directors: Lillian F. Schwartz & Ken Knowlton
Year: 1970
Time: 4 mins
Music: Gershon Kingsley
Eye of Sound: Driven by the hectic moog music of Gershton Kingsley, pioneer of computer art Lillian Schwartz reveals in this short film a prophecy about the forthcoming electronic age and "information highway". Commissioned by AT&T, Pixillation discloses a world where microchip labyrinths and patterned synthetic noise dilute (in) human blood, and where complete organicity is no longer possible.

CHRIS & COSEY
EUROPEAN RENDEZ-VOUS (1984)

Director: John Lacey
Year: 1984
Time: 50 mins
Music: Chris & Cosey
Eye of Sound: Those were the days: when the future wasn't bright and dystopia was your daily bread; when apocalypse was just now and the winters cold as dead. Flower-power dreams withered, post-industrial gloom remained. Chris & Cosey's rendez-vous is one with an era, a new stage in the history of gray when synth was to reign supreme paving Europe's way to a new fantasy: the utopia of electric dreams.

LICHTER PÉTER
LIGHT SLEEP (2009)

Director: Lichter Péter
Year: 2009
Time: 6 mins
Music: Horváth Ádám Márton
Eye of Sound: Dream or nightmare, Light Sleep recaptures the fabric of the unconscious through decomposing film. Eros fades away as the delicate and sparse soundscapes of Márton drift into silence, allowing sleeping beauties to finally sleep. Memory regained, memory extinct; memory of what you crave and what you lost.

GRUPPO D'IMPROVVISAZIONI NUOVA CONSONANZA (1967)

Director: Theo Gallehr
Year: 1967
Time: 47 mins
Music
Mario Bertoncini
Walter Branchi
Franco Evengelisti
John Heineman
Roland Kayn
Ennio Morricone
Ivan Vandor
Frederic Rzewski
Eye of Sound: Nuova Consonanza operated as a new music collective trying to bridge the gap between composition and performance, exploring sonic fields not too distant from those charted by AMM or MEV. Though they worked as an open project, this fascinating film documents the group's early experiments through their core-founders. Stage performances, backstage experiments, interviews (subtitled) and discussions pile up as if part of the same event. And this event is justifiably felt by the protagonists as a revolutionary moment, one which would lead them to unexplored sound territories. Not surprisingly, the music still sounds as fresh, inventive and untamed as it probably did when it was recorded.

LUC FERRARI & OTOMO YOSHIHIDE
SLOW LANDING (2008)

Director: Miyaoka Hideyuki
Year: 2008
Time: 11 mins
Music: Luc Ferrari & Otomo Yoshihide
Eye of Sound: Two supremely generous souls join forces against tedium in this recording of a 2003 Tokyo performance. Two generations, two fields of acceptance, two continents, but both masters in the art of transgressing musical boundaries. In the end, a brief commentary by Ferrari contextualizing the work of Otomo as "live concrète". More than just a live performance, a genealogical statement.

TOSHIO MATSUMOTO
EVERYTHING VISIBLE IS EMPTY (1975)

Director: Toshio Matsumoto
Year: 1975
Time: 8 mins
Music: Toshi Ichiyanagi
Eye of Sound: There's more to picture than meets the eye in this journey into oriental metaphysical imagery. Starting (in a very Christian manner) with the Word, the film draws an explosion of visible forms, as if a sign of the shattering of shapes in the mundane world. But time is cyclical, of course, and what was once a multitude of sensible realities must eventually return to the Word and, finally, to sheer Color.

BRUCE CONNER
LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS (1967)

Director: Bruce Conner
Year: 1967
Time: 13 mins
Music: Terry Riley
Eye of Sound: Expecting a nuclear disaster, Conner moved down to Mexico in 1962, where he spent his time looking for mushrooms with Timothy Leary. Later, Conner added footage of similar hunts in Frisco and in 1997 he decided to set it against a 1968 Terry Riley soundtrack. The result is a strange combination of typical 60s psychedelic editing with what might appear to be a road movie interested in exotic landscapes. A classic of american avant film.

JERRY ABRAMS
EYETOON (1968)

Director: Jerry Abrams
Year: 1968
Time: 8 mins
Music: David Litwin
Eye of Sound: Guru of psychedelic shorts and love generation docs offers an expansive trip through his acid constellation. Shot in 16 mm and set against the fast-paced electronic music of Litwin, Eyetoon is a political experiment on chromatic burst, self-penetration and lysergic sex as a belligerent strategy against war. Good for evil, Eyetoon sings the body fractal.

Time: 52 mins
Music
Lester Bowie
Joseph Jarman
Roscoe Mitchell
Malachi Favors Maghostus
Famodou Don Moye

Time: 12 mins
